The Best Movies to Watch on a Rainy Day
By Brooke Bailey
It’s the start of hurricane season here in the southeast, which means lots of time spent inside escaping the torrential rain. As I’m writing this post, my home here in south Alabama is being turned into a small ocean by Tropical Storm Cindy, which, on top of the daily afternoon storms, has left me with some time to kill inside.
There’s hardly a better way to spend a rainy day than curled up on the couch with a great movie and this list includes some of my absolute favorites.
I could honestly list almost any Pixar movie here because they are PERFECT rainy day movies. On top of the beautiful animation and superb storytelling, the immersive soundtracks that accompany them layered with the sound of the rain outside is the perfect backdrop to your lazy day.
There’s something about The Incredibles that makes me want to watch it every time it rains; whether it’s the scenes set in the lush rainforest or the fact that it’s just an amazing movie, this movie should definitely be at the top of your rainy day movie watching list.
Romeo + Juliet
Aside from the fact that this is my favorite movie of all time, Romeo + Juliet is another quintessentially perfect rainy day movie. This “modern” retelling of the Shakespeare classic features a young Leo DiCaprio looking like he just went through a growth spurt and doesn’t have full control of his limbs yet, a stellar soundtrack, and an ending that will make you mad every time (even though you already know what’s going to happen). The movie features a lot of water imagery (like, a lot) which will just add to your entire rainy-day aesthetic and somehow make you long for mid-90s MTV culture.
I feel like I shouldn’t have to explain this one because HP marathon + rain + snacks = perfect day. I don’t know how you can top it, honestly.
Clueless is the perfect movie to watch when you needs something to brighten up a dreary day. Another mid-90s movie set in California, the conversation about the best teen movies of all time begins and ends with Clueless. With it’s wonderfully strong sense of style, ridiculous cast of wild characters, and a young Paul Rudd, this is the perfect movie to watch when you’re sick and tired of all the rain outside.
Ok, I couldn’t make it out of this list without mentioning another Pixar movie, but can you really blame me? Finding Nemo takes place underwater and all the rain outside probably makes you feel like you’re underwater which makes this the perfect movie for rainy days! Plus, this movie is great and wonderful and beautiful and comes with an amazing score that’ll be a stunning soundtrack to your day.
Rom-coms are a no-brainer for great rainy day movies and 27 Dresses is no exception. This movie is crazy outlandish and 100 percent petty af, but those are the best kind of movies, in my humble opinion. Plus you can probably sympathize with that one scene when Katherine Heigl and James Marsden get stuck in her car in the middle of a rainstorm, which is truly the turning point in the plot. Also, I definitely want to try on all 27 of her bridesmaid dresses.
Honorable mentions that are also great movies to watch when it’s raining:
The Princess Bride
Addams Family Values
The Little Mermaid
The Devil Wears Prada
